NRM Warns Aspirants Against Returning as Independents After Losing Primaries

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has warned aspirants for LC5 and MP positions that they will not be allowed to return as independents in the general elections if they lose in the party primaries.

The party has introduced new guidelines requiring all candidates to sign a consent form agreeing not to contest as independents if unsuccessful in the primaries.

Samuel Eyenga, Senior Manager for Mobilization and Cadre Development at the NRM Secretariat, acknowledged that past gaps in the party register allowed some leniency. However, with the register now fully cleaned, the party intends to strictly enforce discipline.

Eyenga confirmed that all aspirants for LC5 and MP positions must sign the consent form and warned that disciplinary measures will be applied to those who defy party rules.

Alfred Edakasi Elalu Olale, MP for Kaberamaido County, said he would respect the party constitution and the will of the people. He expressed confidence in his parliamentary performance and his electorate's support.

On the other hand, Hon. Felix Okot Ogong, MP for Dokolo South, stated that the national constitution takes precedence over party rules and guarantees freedom of expression and association including political participation.

Despite that, Hon. Okot affirmed that if he loses the primaries, he will support the party’s flag bearer in the spirit of unity and cohesion.

In past elections, many NRM aspirants who lost primaries ran as independents, citing irregularities yet most were later welcomed back to the party. It remains to be seen how the new legal measures will be implemented to curb indiscipline within party ranks.
