Vatican has officially released a statement noting that Pope Francis remains in a critical condition without experiencing any further respiratory crises, this was confirmed on Sunday.

The 87-year-old pontiff continues to receive high-flow oxygen therapy and has undergone blood transfusions. Blood tests indicate mild renal insufficiency, a kidney issue that is currently under control. Despite his condition, he remains alert and well-oriented, according to the Vatican.

Pope Francis was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on February 14 after experiencing breathing difficulties for several days. Initially treated for bronchitis, he was later diagnosed with pneumonia in both lungs. His platelet count remains stable despite thrombocytopenia, a condition characterized by low blood platelet levels.

On Sunday morning, the Pope participated in Holy Mass with his caregivers. However, the Vatican did not provide a prognosis, citing the complexity of his condition.

Earlier in the day, Pope Francis issued a statement asking Catholics to pray for him after missing the traditional Angelus prayer for the second consecutive week.

The Pope, who underwent partial lung removal as a young man due to pleurisy, is particularly vulnerable to pneumonia. He has been hospitalized multiple times during his 12-year papacy, including treatment for bronchitis at the same hospital in March 2023.

Pope Francis, originally from Argentina, is the first Latin American and Jesuit leader of the Roman Catholic Church.
