Bishop Wanok Calls for Justice, Unity, and Hope in Reflective Easter Message

LIRA – In a heartfelt Easter message, the Bishop of Lira Diocese, Rt. Rev. Sanctus Lino Wanok, has called on Christians to embrace the true meaning of Easter, emphasizing themes of liberation, human dignity, and spiritual renewal.

Speaking from his diocesan office, Bishop Wanok urged the faithful to see the resurrection of Christ not just as a religious tradition, but as a profound symbol of hope in the face of despair and freedom from oppression, whether social, economic, or spiritual.

"Easter is not just an event; it is a spiritual journey," said Bishop Wanok.

He explained that Easter marks the end of the 40-day Lenten period of self-reflection, sacrifice, and spiritual growth, reflecting Christ’s journey of suffering, crucifixion, and resurrection.

"Through the lens of faith, Easter becomes a testimony to the power of divine love and liberation. It reminds us that God walks with us through our trials, offering redemption and transformation," Bishop Wanok added.

The Bishop also connected Easter to its Jewish roots in Passover, the commemoration of the Israelites' liberation from slavery in Egypt.

"This deliverance was not only a pivotal moment in history but a prophetic prelude to the mission of Jesus Christ," he explained.

He emphasized that the theme of liberation is central to the Christian journey and that the same God who freed the Israelites is the God who raised Christ from the dead.

Turning to Uganda’s current challenges, Bishop Wanok raised concerns about the struggles faced by Ugandans, including economic hardship, political instability, and growing social inequality.

"Our nation is experiencing a crisis of truth. Issues like maternal and infant mortality, alcoholism, sectarianism, corruption, and unemployment continue to burden Ugandans," he said, echoing concerns raised by the Uganda Episcopal Conference in their recent letter, "The Truth Will Set You Free."

Bishop Wanok urged Christians to take concrete actions by standing up for justice, caring for the vulnerable, and promoting unity within their families and communities.

He stressed the importance of respecting the inherent dignity of all human life, particularly in a world where many are marginalized, including the poor, elderly, sick, and displaced.

The Bishop also highlighted the importance of the Sacraments, describing them as vital spiritual lifelines.

"Through Baptism, we enter into Christ’s death and resurrection. Through the Eucharist, we are nourished by His life. These are not just rituals; they are lifelines," he said.

He encouraged the faithful to deepen their devotion to the Sacraments to strengthen personal faith and promote unity within Christian communities.

While Easter is a Christian celebration, Bishop Wanok stressed that its message is universal, transcending boundaries.
