Minister Magyezi's Order Fulfilled as Rose Ongom Takes Mantle as Mayor Lira City West Division

LIRA: Theophilas Tibihika, the Town Clerk of Lira City Council on Friday, April 19th 2024 confirmed the acting Mayor of Lira city west division, Amolo Rose Ongom as the official Mayor in office till 2026.
Lira City West Division mayoral seat fell vacant following the death of the division mayor, Micheal Ogwal Achonga in October 14th,2023.
Recently, the Minister of Local Government Raphael Magyezi in his letter dated April 10th, 2024 to the acting Mayor Rose Ongom, affirmed that Section 18(5) of the Local Government act CAP 243 provide that the deputy Mayor assumes the office of the Chairperson or Mayor until the Independent Electoral Commission organises a by- election to fill the vacant position left after the demise of the then Mayor, Micheal Ogwal Achonga.
Speaking at the confirmation meeting held at Lira City Council, Tibihika said Rose Ongom was already sworn in as deputy mayor, a reason she cannot be subjected to fresh swearing-in.
The speaker of Lira City Council, Patrick Okwir highlighted that the Local Government Act section 18 (5) states that the division deputy mayor(s) would take over the office of the mayors in case of death until a by-election is held within 60 days.
It is upon this backdrop that speaker Okwir pledged full support to Rose Ongom as she takes mantle in the office in the remaining time frame.
Full Mayor Rose Ongom promised to liase and work together with civil servants and councilors for development of Lira city West division.
