Bishop Wanok Rallies Lira for Integrity, Unity on Palm Sunday

Lira – Christians in Lira joined millions around the world in marking Palm Sunday, led by the Right Reverend Sanctus Lino Wanok of Lira Diocese.

Bishop Wanok led a colorful procession from the Old Aki Bua Site to Lira Cathedral, drawing hundreds of faithful in a show of unity and devotion. Singing hymns and waving palm branches, the faithful filled the streets with joy as they ushered in Holy Week.

During Mass, Bishop Wanok delivered a powerful message urging Christians to live lives rooted in holiness, integrity, and unity.

“We must not be Christians by name but by action. Let the triumph of Jesus inspire us to overcome sin and live righteously", he said.

The bishop also took aim at corruption and abuse of public office, calling on civil servants and leaders to act with integrity and serve with accountability.

“Corruption is evil and must be fought with all our strength", he emphasized.

He appealed to cultural leaders to foster unity within the Lango sub-region, stressing that culture should build, not divide. He also reminded fellow clergy to remain committed to their pastoral roles with love and humility.

Health Minister and Lira City Woman MP, Hon. Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, also attended the celebration. She used the occasion to promote the new R21/Matrix-M malaria vaccine, targeting children aged 5 to 18 months.

“The malaria vaccine is a gift to our children. Let’s embrace it to save lives"she said.

Dr. Aceng also urged Ugandans to promote peace as the country heads toward the 2026 general elections.

“Politics should unite us, not divide us. Let us speak, act, and vote with love", she added.

As Holy Week begins, both religious and political leaders in Lira are calling for moral renewal, health, and unity across Uganda.
