Uganda Police Disperse Akena Supporters with Tear Gas at Alira Primary School

Tension flared at Aliri Primary School as Uganda Police fired tear gas to disperse supporters of Jimmy James Michael Akena, the party President of Uganda People's congress (UPC) who had gathered in large numbers.

The incident, which unfolded amid heightened political activity dubbed "UPC mobilisation tour" saw security forces move in to quell what they termed as an "unlawful assembly."

The UPC had embarked on a mobilisation tour at Alira Primary School, Akura sub county in Alebtong district as part of their efforts to engage with the community and strengthen their support base in the region ahead of the 2026 general polls.

However, upon arrival at around 2:00pm, they were met with resistance from Alebtong Residence District Commissioner, Geoffrey Okiswa and the District Police Commissioner, SP Joshua Mwesigwa who cited security concerns and the lack of proper authorization as reasons for halting the event.

UPC members argued that they had followed all necessary procedures to secure permission for the assembly and viewed the authorities' intervention as a deliberate attempt to suppress their political activities.

The situation escalated into a heated exchange, drawing attention from local residents and raising questions about the fairness of political processes in the district.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by opposition parties in Uganda, where political space is often restricted, and mobilization efforts are frequently hindered by local authorities.

The UPC has called for an investigation into the matter, urging the government to ensure that all political parties are granted equal opportunities to engage with the electorate without undue interference.

As the political climate in Uganda continues to evolve, incidents like the one at Alira Primary School underscore the need for a more inclusive and democratic environment that allows for free political expression and participation across all parties.

Eyewitnesses reported chaotic scenes as people scrambled for safety, with many choking on the tear gas. Supporters had converged at the school grounds to express their solidarity with Akena, a prominent political figure, but the police intervened, citing security concerns.

Several individuals, including pupils, women and youths, were caught in the melee. Police officers justified their actions, stating that the gathering lacked proper authorization. However, Akena’s camp condemned the move, calling it an infringement on their right to peaceful assembly.

The incident adds to growing concerns over political freedoms and the use of force in handling opposition gatherings in Uganda. As the dust settles, questions remain about the implications of such crackdowns on democratic participation ahead of upcoming political events.
