Agwata Town Council Launches New Market to Boost Revenue and Eradicate Poverty

Residents of Agwata Town Council in Dokolo District, along with local leaders and Town Council authorities, gathered for the official launch of the Agwata Town Council Main Market, located in Agebo "A", Amuda Central Ward. The new market is expected to significantly improve revenue collection and play a key role in poverty eradication within the community.

The event, which saw participation from local communities, leaders, and politicians, celebrated the establishment of the market as a major step toward economic growth in the area. Market vendors such as Willy Ebong, Scovia Apili, Christina Okodi, and Gloria Abuni expressed their excitement, highlighting the positive impact the market will have on their businesses and household incomes. They applauded the initiative and expressed optimism about its potential to reduce poverty and improve livelihoods.

John Bosco Ogwal, the Town Clerk of Agwata Town Council, spoke at the event, emphasizing that the new market will boost revenue collection compared to previous years, when collections were relatively low. He also noted that the market will empower both men and women by providing new business opportunities. Ogwal revealed plans to introduce additional services, including a new taxi stage, to further enhance the town’s infrastructure and services.

Tonny Obel Obala, the Chairperson LCIII of Agwata Town Council, addressed the gathering, stating that the primary goal of the market is to alleviate poverty in the community. He encouraged residents to avoid negative practices such as witchcraft and theft, which could hinder the development of the area.

Hon. Jennet Abongo, Female LCV Councilor of Agwata Town Council and Agwata Sub-county, described the market launch as a significant achievement. She urged the community to use the market as a platform to improve their livelihoods and lifestyle.

Tonny Odongo Ocen, the Vice Chairperson LCV of Dokolo District, encouraged the people of Dokolo to embrace the market and use it to enhance their household incomes and improve their standard of living.

Dr. Lalam Anna Grace Atine, NRM Aspirant for the Women MP seat in the 2026/2031 elections, called on the Town Council authority to protect the market as a valuable source of revenue that could support further development in schools, hospitals, and infrastructure. She also urged residents to vote for trusted leaders to bring more services to the area.

Jusphine Acen, the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) Aspirant for MP of Dokolo North Constituency, commended the leadership of Agwata Town Council for their vision and efforts in establishing the market. She suggested the issuance of certificates of recognition to honor those who donated land for the market’s establishment.

As the chief guest at the launch, Hon. Moses Ogwal Goli, Member of Parliament for Dokolo North Constituency, donated over two million shillings to various SACCOs in Agwata Town Council. He urged residents to embrace a culture of saving and group membership in order to benefit from government programs such as Emyoga and the Parish Development Model (PDM), which aim to combat poverty.

The Agwata Town Council Main Market, located in Agebo "A", Amuda Central Ward, will operate every Monday, and is set to play a crucial role in driving the economic development of the area.
