Lango Zone Schools Face Early Setbacks; Mentor SS and St. Mary Magdalene Keep Championship Dreams Alive

Ngora & Bukedea Districts, Uganda — May 8, 2025 — The USSSA National Championship is heating up as the Lango Zone schools battle it out on the fields in Ngora and Bukedea Districts. While some schools have faced tough luck, two standout institutions — St. Mary Magdalene Girls' Secondary School and Mentor Secondary School — continue to shine as the only Lango representatives still in strong contention. off with a challenging start for several Lango Zone schools. On match day one (Tuesday, May 6), Lira Town College’s boys team narrowly lost 1-0 in a heartbreaker with a last-minute goal conceded. Wisdom High School also faced disappointment, falling 2-1 to Mumsa High School from Mityana.
The girls’ category saw Acaba Secondary School suffer a close 3-2 defeat to Tororo Girls' Secondary School on match day two. Despite a spirited second-half comeback with two consolation goals, Acaba couldn't overturn their first-half deficit.
Meanwhile, the boys’ teams continued to struggle. Lira Town College was handed a heavy 4-0 loss by Kawempe Muslim, while Wisdom High School managed a 1-1 draw with Teso Progressive Academy.
Mentor Schools Lead the Charge
Amid these setbacks, Mentor Secondary School and St. Mary Magdalene Girls' Secondary School have emerged as beacons of hope for the Lango Zone. Mentor SS secured a crucial 1-0 victory against Mt. St. Zion, thanks to a decisive goal by Emmanuel Epila.
The girls from St. Mary Magdalene Girls' Secondary School opened their campaign with a commanding 3-0 win over Bubangizi SS. Mary Alaro, Flavia Anyinge and Elizabeth Atyang were the goal scorers, showcasing the team's attacking prowess.
