Fatal Road Accident on Dokolo-Lira Highway

One person has been confirmed dead, and four others have sustained injuries after a fatal road accident along the Dokolo-Lira highway, caused by a tyre burst.
SP Patience Bangazi, the District Police Commander of Dokolo District, confirmed in a phone interview with our reporter that investigations into the accident have begun. She stated that on March 11, 2025, a vehicle with registration number UN205Z, a Noah car, was traveling from Dokolo District to Lira City when its tyres burst between Akolodong and Adwoki Trading Centre, causing the vehicle to overturn. Police officers from the Dokolo Central Police Station (CPS) visited the scene, and the vehicle has been taken to Adwoki Police Station for further investigation.
Bangazi issued a warning to passengers, urging them to avoid boarding vehicles in poor mechanical condition, which can endanger their lives. She also cautioned drivers to avoid speeding and overloading, which put passengers at risk.
Mulkom Okwanga, the Chairperson of the Dokolo Taxi Drivers and Conductors Association, confirmed the incident, explaining that the vehicle’s tyres burst, causing the vehicle to overturn and injure the passengers.
He added that the injured victims were first taken to Dokolo H/LCIV before being transferred to Lira Regional Referral Hospital, where one person, Kerren Akello, was pronounced dead. Four others sustained serious injuries.
Okwanga identified the driver as Erick Okello, who reportedly jumped out of the vehicle and fled the scene after the incident. As of the time of filing the report, he was still at large. Okwanga also mentioned that the Dokolo Taxi Drivers and Conductors Association would provide necessary support to the family of the deceased.
