Building a Better Lira City: Charles Opio's Journey of Leadership and Community Triumph

Lira City, Uganda — In the bustling political landscape of Lira City East Division, one name is rapidly gaining momentum: Charles Opio. A seasoned leader with a track record of community activism and sports leadership, Opio is contesting for the coveted position of City Councillor representing Lira City East Division in the upcoming elections. His journey from grassroots activism to political leadership is marked by courage, dedication, and a passionate commitment to justice and development.
Early Leadership and Advocacy
Opio’s political career began in 2016 when he was elected Councillor of Burlobo Parish and soon after became the Speaker of Adekokwok Sub County. His tenure was notable for his unwavering stance against injustice, notably in 2018 when he led efforts to stop the impunity of some Indian employers in Lira. This followed a disturbing incident involving David Ogwang, a 17 year-old member of the Liira clan, who was brutally assaulted by managers at Tip Top Bakery. As the then Youth Leader of the Liira clan, Opio mobilized the community and used his council position to hold the perpetrators accountable, earning widespread respect.
Championing Administrative Reforms
Opio’s leadership extended beyond advocacy. He was instrumental in the administrative reorganization that saw Adekokwok Sub County annexed to Lira City. This strategic move not only enhanced local governance but also positioned Opio to contest for the Councillor seat representing Burlobo Ward in the newly formed Lira City East Division in 2021. His appointment as Secretary of Finance, Planning, and Administration underscores his expertise and trust within the council.
Football and Youth Empowerment
Beyond politics, Charles Opio is a passionate football enthusiast and a beacon for youth empowerment. Owning Soficel FC, a competitive football club in Lira’s 4th Division, he combines his love for the sport with his leadership skills. Opio holds a CAF C coaching certificate and is a certified FUFA scout, credentials that have enabled him to nurture young talent in the region.
In a landmark achievement, Opio led the Lango Province team and delegation to the controversial final of the FUFA Drum tournament’s 4th edition on March 23, 2024. Under his guidance, Lango Province emerged champions, a victory that has ignited pride and optimism across the province.
Looking Ahead
As Charles Opio continues to serve as Secretary of Finance, Planning, and Administration, his constituents in Lira City East Division watch with anticipation. His blend of political acumen, community activism, and dedication to youth sports positions him as a dynamic leader with the potential to transform the City.
