Bishop Wanok to Politicians: Stay away from Violence, Abusive Language

Lira - As Uganda gears up for the highly anticipated 2026 general elections, Rt. Rev. Bishop Sanctus Lino Wanok, the Bishop of Lira Diocese has called on politicians to maintain peace, respect, and decorum in their campaigns.
Bishop Wanok cautioned political leaders against using abusive language and inciting violence, warning that such actions could destabilize the nation and divide communities.
Speaking during the erection of St. Peters Parish, Anai in Lira City West Division that witnessed the presence in various political players including; Minister Betty Amongi, Minister Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero, MP Obong Vincent Shedrick Eyit, Local Government officials among others, Bishop Wanok urged politicians to conduct issue-based campaigns that focus on the needs and aspirations of the people rather than engaging in personal attacks and hostility. He emphasized that leadership is about service and unity, not confrontation and hatred.
"I appeal to all political actors to embrace tolerance, love, and dialogue instead of insults and aggression. Words have power, and when misused, they can ignite conflict," Bishop Wanok emphasised.
His remarks come as political temperatures begin to rise across the country, with candidates from various parties gearing up to launch their campaigns.
Recent incidents of inflammatory rhetoric and clashes among rival supporters have raised concerns about the potential for election-related violence.
Bishop Wanok's message echoes concerns that were recently raised by other religious and civic leaders who have called for a peaceful electoral process. With memories of the bloody 2021election-related violence still fresh in the minds of many Ugandans, the call for restraint and respect in political discourse is more critical than ever.
As the campaign season gains momentum, all eyes will be on political leaders to see if they heed the Bishop's call and uphold the values of democracy, peace, and unity.
