Alebtong: 09-10-2025 Alebtong district local government authorities have told Radio Qfm that the Rationalization of Uganda National Roads Authority-UNRA has slowed roads maintenance and rehabilitation in the district.
UNRA, a government agency charged with the construction and maintained of national roads was early this year through a bill processed in parliament shifted to the ministry of works and transport.
This new development has stalled works on many of the roads network in the country that was managed by UNRA and Alebtong district is not an exception.
Speaking to our correspondent on Monday, Tom Opio, the district engineer while responding to a public outcry on the impassable roads in the district said they couldn’t do much at the moment due to limited resources.
“The financial year is just coming to an end and all the funds have been committed besides we have to seek for permission from the ministry of works before we can commence work on some of these roads….” Tom Opio an engineer in charge of roads in Alebtong district told Radio Qfm.
According to Opio, the district leadership is aware of the sorry state of the roads in some parts of the district but was quick to add that they can’t do much at the moment because the district does not have jurisdiction on some of these roads except the ministry of works and transport and he cited an example of a 10km road that stretches from Aloi town council to Omoro corner in Alebtong town council.
When contacted by our reporter, David Kennedy Odongo, the LCV chairperson of Alebtong admitted that the heavy rains have made some of the roads impassable and that as district leaders they are aware of this situation and just like his engineer, Odongo said not much can be done in haste to rescue the situation unless they obtain clearance from Uganda National Roads Authority now being managed by the ministry of works and transport.
