A 25-year-old man has been lynched by a mob in Kalobo village, Lwala Parish, Otuboi Sub-county in Kalaki District after he was allegedly caught with three stolen sheep.
The victim, identified as Emmanuel Ewoku, a resident of the same area, was reportedly found in possession of the stolen animals at his home on Tuesday morning. Witnesses say an altercation with local residents escalated into violence, resulting in his death before law enforcement could intervene.
Local leaders have condemned the incident and called for restraint among community members. Simon Ecir, the LCI Chairperson of Kalobo village, confirmed the attack in a telephone interview and urged residents to report suspected crimes to the authorities.
“It is important that people avoid taking the law into their own hands. Any suspected wrongdoing should be handled through lawful channels,” Ecir said.
Moses Oryanda, the LCIII Chairperson of Otuboi Sub-county, also confirmed the incident. He said the case has been reported to Kalaki Central Police Station and that a team of officers visited the scene to gather evidence and record witness statements.
However, no arrests have been made as the key suspects had already fled by the time police arrived.
The body of the deceased was transported to Lwala Hospital for a postmortem examination as investigations continue.
Oryanda adviced young people to engage in lawful and productive activities such as farming, poultry rearing, and small-scale enterprises, warning against criminal behavior that can lead to tragic consequences.
Authorities have pledged a full investigation into the incident. Attempts to reach the Kalaki District Police Commander for comment were unsuccessful, as phone calls remained unanswered by press time.
