Minister Acheng Contributes 20M Cash as Minister Amongi Accords 10M Cash and 10M Pledge to Anai Parish

Lira City, Uganda – In a display of political rivalry and community support, Minister of Health Dr. Jane Ruth Acheng and Minister of Gender, Labor and Social Development Hon. Betty Amongi have made significant contributions to St. Peter's Catholic Parish in Anai. The donations, aimed at uplifting the community, have sparked a heated debate among locals regarding the political implications of their generosity.

Dr. Acheng, who also serves as the Woman Member of Parliament for Lira City, presented an envelope containing a generous cash donation of Ugx 20 million. This contribution is earmarked for the purchase of chairs for the newly elevated St. Peter's Catholic Parish. During her speech, Dr. Acheng emphasized her unwavering commitment to supporting faith-based initiatives that foster societal upliftment. "Our churches are the backbone of our communities, and it is our duty to ensure they are well-equipped to serve their congregations," she stated.

In a parallel move, Hon. Betty Amongi, the current MP for Oyam South, contributed Ugx 10 million in cash to bolster women's projects under the Women Guild. Additionally, she pledged another Ugx 10 million to enhance the interior of St. Peter's Anai Catholic Parish.

The contributions from both ministers come in the wake of a fierce political contest brewing in Lira City. As the 2026 general elections approach, speculation is rife regarding the electoral battle between Dr. Acheng and Hon. Amongi. The two prominent figures are gearing up for a showdown, with Amongi eyeing the Lira City Woman MP seat currently held by Dr. Acheng.

Street discussions in Lira have been abuzz with debates about who has outdone the other in their philanthropic efforts. "It's not just about the money; it’s about who can connect better with the people," said a local resident. "Both women are trying to win hearts, and it's fascinating to watch how this will unfold as elections draw near."

Political analysts suggest that these contributions are more than mere donations; they are strategic moves designed to solidify voter support ahead of the upcoming elections. "In Uganda, charity often goes hand in hand with politics," remarked a political commentator. "These acts of giving are likely to be viewed through the lens of electoral strategy."

As both ministers continue to vie for the hearts and minds of the electorate, the people of Lira City are left to ponder not only the immediate benefits of their contributions but also the long-term implications for their community and representation in parliament.
