Karuma and Ayago Bridges to Undergo Expansion Joint Installation, Temporary Closure Announced

The Ministry of Works and Transport has announced the planned installation of expansion joints on Karuma Bridge along the Kampala-Gulu Highway and Ayago Bridge on the Karuma-Olwiyo Road.
Following the partial reopening of Karuma Bridge on December 20, 2024, to allow light vehicles during the festive season, authorities are now set to complete essential works to ensure the bridge’s long-term stability and full traffic restoration.
This will involve the installation of expansion joints, scheduled to take place from March 10 to March 31, 2025. As a result, Karuma Bridge will be completely closed to all traffic during this period.
Simultaneously, the same period will be used to install expansion joints on Ayago Bridge, which has suffered structural fatigue over time.
To minimize inconvenience, the Ministry has advised motorists to use several alternative routes including; Kampala – Gulu/West Nile via Luwero – Kafu – Masindi – Paraa through Murchison Falls National Park Pakwach or Gulu via Olwiyo.
Meanwhile Kampala – Lira via Iganga – Nakalama – Tirinyi – Pallisa – Kumi – Soroti – Lira.
Similarly additional route to Lira used by motorists have been advised to use the Rwenkunye – Apac route via Masindi Port Ferry.
The Ministry of Works and Transport, led by Minister Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala, have expressed regret over any inconvenience caused and has appealed for public cooperation during this crucial maintenance period.
