Accident Claims Four Lives in Katakwi District

A tragic road accident occurred in Katakwi District at Abela Rock in Katakwi Town Council around 6:00 PM on Thursday, January 4, 2024. According to the Resident District Commissioner Katakwi, Maj. Godfrey Katamba, the accident involved a Canter carrying merchandise and transporting approximately 35 traders from the market.

"Four people have lost their lives on the spot, and more than 20 others have sustained serious injuries, with two of them succumbing immediately", said RDC Katamba.

RDC Katamba reported that the truck, originating from Abalata Market in Ongongoja Sub-county, Katakwi District, with registration number plate UBC936M, collided with two individuals on a Boda Boda, registered as UEJ 5621E, resulting in their immediate death.

Eyewitnesses revealed that the Canter experienced mechanical issues with the tyre rod end and was dangerously overloaded with both luggage and passengers.

The injured victims have been swiftly evacuated to Katakwi District Hospital, while ten others requiring further medical attention have been transferred to Soroti Hospital.

RDC Katamba Godfrey has advised traders and drivers to refrain from overloading passengers. "Strict measures will be implemented to address issues of overloading and traders transporting excessive luggage in Fuzo lorries or trucks during market days", he added.

Major Godfrey expressed regret over the incident and urged the public to remain calm, assuring them that all necessary medical assistance is being coordinated with Soroti Hospital promptly.
