"President Museveni should give Pastors Security” - Pastor Martin Ssempa cries out

On Tuesday evening, Pastor Bugingo faced an attack in Namungona Zone 2, Kasubi, Rubaga Division, at Bukalasa Junction along National Housing Road in Kampala while heading home.

Tragically, his bodyguard, Richard Muhumuza from the elite Special Forces Command (SFC), lost his life in the incident. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, as police have not provided a specific attack motive.

Colleagues of Pastor Bugingo, like Pastor Martin Ssempa of Makerere Community Church, speculate on the possible motive. Ssempa suggests that the incident could be linked to Bugingo’s outspoken preaching against homosexuality, noting that he, too, has received death threats due to his evangelism against this vice. Expressing concern for their safety, Ssempa calls on President Museveni to enhance the security of pastors.

However, Pastor Solomon Male of Arising for Christ Church questions the need for an SFC bodyguard, emphasizing the importance of trusting in God over weapons. Male contends that religious leaders should rely on faith rather than firearms, contrasting his approach of not having a bodyguard, lead car, or escorts.

Pastor Male also raises issues within the clergy, alleging involvement in sodomy, fraud, and land grabbing. He suggests that disputes over such matters might lead people to resort to hiring killers when justice is elusive.

Pastor Zachariah Sserwadda of Evangel Church in Jinja condemns the attempt on Bugingo’s life, urging the government to protect all Ugandans from such attacks. Meanwhile, Pastor Paul Batambuze of New Creation Church in Jinja City deems the assassination attempt on a pastor not involved in active politics as unfortunate.
