Umar Kanjule Ogwal Declares Bid for Lira City East MP Seat as Hon. Akena Pursues Presidency

Lira, Uganda — In a surprising political development, Umar Kanjule Ogwal has officially declared his candidacy for the Member of Parliament seat for Lira City East Division, aiming to succeed Hon. Jimmy James Michael Akena, the son of the late Dr. Apollo Milton Obote and current UPC Party President.
Hon. Akena, who has been the incumbent MP for Lira City East, recently announced that he will not seek re-election in the upcoming 2026-2031 parliamentary term. Instead, he has set his sights on contesting for the presidency of Uganda, signaling a significant shift in his political ambitions.
Seizing the opportunity, Umar Kanjule Ogwal, a native of Te Obia in Lira City East, has thrown his hat into the ring under the banner of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party. Ogwal’s campaign is anchored on the slogan, “To be mandated by you but driven by service,” reflecting his commitment to community-driven leadership.
Describing himself as the “long awaited missing link for Lira City East Division,” Ogwal brings a diverse background to the political arena. Known for his passion for football, he holds a prestigious CAF C coaching certificate, making him one of the most qualified coaches in the Lango Sub Region. He is the founder of Tawheed Junior Sports Academy in Lira and currently serves as the Uganda Youth Football Association delegate.
Beyond sports, Ogwal has a rich history in youth leadership and community development. He served as the Lira Municipality Youth Chairperson from 2011 to 2016 and has experience in marketing and branding, having worked with the Lango Province team during the 3rd and 4th editions of the FUFA Drum competitions.
An educationalist and businessman, Ogwal’s multifaceted profile positions him as a strong contender in the NRM primaries, where he will face other aspirants vying for the party’s ticket.
Political analysts suggest that Ogwal’s entry into the race could reshape the dynamics in Lira City East, especially given Hon. Akena’s departure and the shifting allegiances within the constituency.
As the 2026 general elections approach, all eyes will be on Lira City East to see if Umar Kanjule Ogwal can translate his community service and sports leadership into political victory.
