Museveni - Acholi to Auction Cows of Defiant Balaalo
With the Balaalo issue on the rise in Acholi sub-region in Northern Uganda, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has now suggested that the impounded cattle belonging to defiant migrant cattle keepers ( Balaalo) be auctioned and the money generated be used for constructing schools across Northern Uganda.
The revelation was made by Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo Chigamoy on Friday last week that he received a letter from the President revealing that some cattle keepers were already fleeing forceful eviction from the region, leaving behind their cattle.
Justice Owiny-Dollo was responding to questions from Journalists on the update of the eviction of the cattle keepers from the Acholi Sub-region.
Early last week, joint security forces comprising the army and the police carried out an eviction exercise on defiant cattle keepers in the Acholi Sub-region in the cattle farms in Awal-Aboro within Palaro Sub County in Gulu District, Pupwonya and Okidi in Atiak Sub- County, Amuru District.
Last month, State Minister for Northern Uganda Rehabilitation Grace Freedom Kwiyucwiny revealed that about 80,000 herds of cattle in northern Uganda belong to non-compliant migrant cattle keepers who haven’t fenced their land, have no adequate grazing land nor water sources.
