Dokolo Town Council Urges Public to Embrace Property Rate Tax Collection for Development

Benard Opige, the Town Clerk of Dokolo Town Council, has called on both Councilors and the general public to embrace and prioritize the collection of property rate taxes to boost revenue generation for the area's socio-economic and infrastructural development. His statement was made during the main council meeting held on Wednesday evening.

Opige highlighted that Dokolo Town Council charges a 4% tax on immovable assets such as buildings, noting that these taxes contribute to raising revenue for property owners within the area’s jurisdiction.

John Bosco Ogada Odit, the Senior Finance Officer of Dokolo Town Council, acknowledged that there are challenges in collecting property taxes, particularly due to poor mobilization and sensitization efforts. He emphasized that property taxes are a vital source of revenue for the town’s development and that low remittance from the central government continues to affect service delivery.

Ogada Odit further mentioned that despite these challenges, Dokolo Town Council has made significant strides in revenue collection thanks to strategic planning and the commitment of local leadership to engage the business community.

David Emmanuel Mwaka, the Property Tax Portfolio Manager from Lira City Office, addressed the Council, stating that property taxes will be levied only on immovable assets generating income for their owners. Mwaka explained that after professional evaluation by certified valuers, property taxes will be paid annually by the end of the financial year.
