Dokolo North Community Initiative Donates Over Ugx 10 Million in Aid to Flood Victims

In a heartwarming display of solidarity, the Dokolo North Community Initiative (DNCI) has come together to donate food and clothing worth over Ugx 10 million to flood victims in Dokolo North Constituency. The donations were presented on December 28, 2024, at Kachung Primary School in Agwata Sub County, Dokolo District, demonstrating the strength of community unity in times of crisis.

The initiative, led by Professor Constant Okello Obura, a renowned lecturer at Makerere University, emphasized that the aid was entirely funded by the association's members. "This milestone is a testament to the unity among our members, who have opened their hearts and pockets to support those in need," said Professor Obura. He underscored the importance of education as a catalyst for their ability to contribute, noting that many members have secured job opportunities through their academic achievements, which enabled them to give back to their community.

The DNCI has previously supported the local community during the COVID-19 pandemic, providing essential supplies such as facemasks, soaps, and sanitizers, along with blankets and bedsheets to health centers in the area. This ongoing commitment to social responsibility highlights the association’s proactive approach to community welfare.

James Otto Apili, the District Chairperson of Dokolo District, expressed his gratitude during the event, stating, "This is extraordinary. What I have seen here today is something I thought only the affluent could do. It is heartening to witness such generosity within my own jurisdiction." He contributed Ugx 100,000 to the cause, emphasizing the importance of local initiatives in disaster response.

Honorary contributions also came from the area Member of Parliament, Hon. Moses Ogwal Goli, a DNCI member, who donated Ugx 1.1 million worth of cassava flour, soaps, and salt. In addition, Joseph Jones Ogwal Omara Etwop, a parliamentary aspirant for 2026-2031 and association member, extended his condolences to families affected by the floods and urged the government to offer more substantial support. "Our association's resources are limited, and the government must act swiftly to assist those impacted by this natural disaster," he stated, pledging to solicit further aid from the government through official channels.

The flooding, which has been especially severe along the banks of the River Nile and Lake Kwania, has displaced many families, including vulnerable individuals such as an 85-year-old Patrick Otom and a 105-year-old Elizabeth Okullo who received their relief items at home due to their frail conditions.

The DNCI is composed of elite members from various sectors, including educators, health professionals, public servants, and business leaders, showcasing a diverse representation of the Dokolo community. The organization is governed by an executive committee, with Professor Okello Obura at its helm.

As the community bands together to recover from the recent floods, the actions of the Dokolo North Community Initiative serve as a powerful reminder of the impact that collective efforts can have in times of need. The association’s dedication to providing immediate relief highlights the importance of community and the need for further government intervention to support the affected families.
