Lira City USSSA: Magdalene Thumps SK Half a Dozen as Top Star Edge King James in Girls' Semis

LIRA, UGANDA – In a thrilling display, St. Mary’s Magdalene Girls School triumphed over St. Katherine Girls SS (SK) with a resounding 6-0 victory in the semi-finals of the Lira City USSSA tournament held on Monday, March 17, 2025. The match, played at the Erute Primary School Playground, showcased the relentless offensive prowess of Magdalene, who are on a quest to defend their championship title.
Despite the scoreline, SK's goalkeeper delivered a commendable performance, executing a series of impressive saves that kept her team in the game for much longer than the final tally might suggest. Conceding four goals in the first half and two in the second, the goalkeeper's heroics were a testament to her skills, as she faced an onslaught from Magdalene's forwards.
In the other semi-final clash held at Anai Primary School Playground, Top Star Secondary School edged out King James Comprehensive School with a narrow 2-1 victory. This win secures a final matchup against St. Mary’s Magdalene, set to take place on Sunday, March 23, 2025, at UTC Lira, kicking off at 1 PM.
The road to the finals has not been without its challenges. St. Katherine Girls SS, after their semi-final defeat, faced King James Comprehensive School in the third-place playoff on Wednesday, March 18, 2025. Unfortunately for SK, their luck did not change, as they fell 1-0 to King James, sealing their fate in the tournament.
Meanwhile, in the boys' category, Lira Town College is set to battle King James Comprehensive School for the third position, with kickoff scheduled for 1 PM at the UTC Lira playground. In another exciting matchup, Faith SS will face Light Vocational Secondary School at 3 PM to determine which team will secure the fifth boys' slot for the upcoming Lango Zonal meet.
This year, Lira City proudly hosts the Lango Zonal level, with five slots available for boys and four for girls. St. Mary’s Magdalene, as both the host and defending champion, aims to solidify their legacy in the tournament. Notably, Mentor SS, the previous boys' champion, and Dr. Obote College, the host, have already secured their positions.
