Karuma and Ayago Bridges Closure Extended to March 17

The Ministry of Works and Transport (MoWT) has announced an extension of the closure of Karuma and Ayago Bridges until Monday, 17th March 2025. The decision, according to the ministry, is to allow for the completion of ongoing repairs on the Masindi Port Ferry, one of the key alternative routes for motorists.

In a statement released on Sunday, MoWT confirmed that the bridges will remain inaccessible to all traffic to facilitate the scheduled installation of expansion joints. The repairs are expected to be completed, and the bridges reopened by Monday, 7th April 2025.

To ease movement during the closure, the ministry has provided alternative routes for motorists traveling to and from Kampala, Gulu, West Nile, and Lira.

For those heading to Gulu or West Nile from Kampala, the recommended route is Luwero - Kafu - Masindi - Paraa (Murchison Falls National Park) - Pakwach or Gulu via Olwiyo.

Meanwhile, travelers from Kampala to Lira are advised to use the Iganga - Nakalama - Tirinyi - Pallisa - Kumi - Soroti - Lira route.

The Ministry has urged the public to remain patient and cooperate as the maintenance work continues, emphasizing that the upgrades will enhance the safety and durability of the bridges.

Motorists are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and use the designated alternative routes until the bridges are reopened.
