Minister Magyezi okays Deputy Mayor Lira city West Division office Mantle
The mayoral seat fell vacant following the demise of the then Mayor, Michael Ogwal Achonga in October 14, 2023.

The Minister of Local Government, Raphael Magyezi has accorded more power to Amolo Rose Ongom to continue acting as mayor for Lira City West Division until the Independent Electoral Commission organise a by-Election.
In his letter dated April 10th April, 2024 to the acting Mayor Rose Ongom, Magyezi affirmed that Section 18(5) of the Local Government act CAP 243 provides that the Deputy mayor will assume the office of the District Chairperson or Mayor until the EC organises a by- election upon the death or resignation of the office bearer.

He challenges that the Ministry of Local Government cannot accept to leave leadership vacuums in Lira City West Division yet the laws allow the deputy to act and perform all functions in the capacity of Mayor.
Minister Magyezi also charged the division Town Clerk, Emmanuel Komakech and Speaker Daniel Okello to ensure that the council lay out the budget draft for the Financial Year 2024/2025 not later than April 15th, 2024.
However, Speaker Daniel Okello in his letter to division Town clerk said he will follow all the relevant laws regarding how council business is to be conducted.
