Investigations Underway in Dokolo District After Suspected Murder of Local Man

DOKOLO DISTRICT, UGANDA – In a tragic turn of events, the Dokolo District police are investigating a suspected murder that unfolded late on November 17, 2024, in Aputi village. The victim, 29-year-old, Calvin Obonyo, died from stab wounds inflicted during a violent altercation linked to a dispute over a romantic relationship.

The incident reportedly stemmed from tensions between Obonyo and Calvin Omara, 15, who has been identified as the primary suspect. Sources indicate that Omara was displeased with Obonyo's romantic interest in his mother, Caroline Ejang, 56. The two men had previously clashed, with violent confrontations on both November 11 and again on the night of the incident.

Eyewitnesses recount a heated exchange that escalated into a brawl at a local drinking spot around 10 p.m. on November 17. During this confrontation, it is alleged that Omara used a sharp object to stab Obonyo in the chest. After sustaining severe injuries, Obonyo attempted to pursue Omara but collapsed due to excessive bleeding before help could arrive.

The community's response was swift, with residents rallying together to apprehend Omara following the incident. He is currently in police custody as authorities work to gather evidence and conduct a thorough investigation. In a bid to ensure her safety amid rising tensions, Ejang has also been taken into custody, as her property was later vandalized by irate relatives of the deceased.

“This act of violence is deeply concerning. We are committed to ensuring justice is served while restoring peace to the community,” stated SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, Public Relations Officer for the North Kyoga Region. “We condemn the destructive behavior exhibited by some individuals following the incident. It is crucial for both parties to remain calm as we proceed with our inquiries.”

As police secured the crime scene, the body of the deceased was taken to Dokolo Health Centre IV for a postmortem examination. The investigation continues as authorities seek to piece together the events leading to the tragic loss of life.
