Local Council one chairpersons for both Lira City West and East Divisions have decried the level of challenges they are faced with despite being in the forefront of steering government programs in their cells.
The leaders made the outcry to Gender Minister, Betty Amongi Akena during the Minister's launch of two Sacco groups for LC's in Lira City West and East Divisions.
George Otwal, the Chairperson of all the LCs in Lira City West division noted that they play a vital role in ensuring that government programs succeed but their efforts are not appreciated and valued as leaders in the country.
Otwal said that the 10,000 monthly payment by the government to them is an insult compared to what they do in mobilizing the community to support government programs among others the Parish Development Model(PDM), Census, Immunisations and others.
Meanwhile, Moses Okullu Opio, the Chairperson of all LC's in Lira City East Division said that the government should consider supporting them economically.
Okullu Moses notes that once the support to LC's Sacco is accorded, they will go a long way in improving their livelihood financially.
While launching the Sacco groups in both City East and West divisions, Minister Betty Amongi acknowledged the usefulness of LC's in Uganda.
"You are the president of your respective cells and yes, the government does recognize you for the efforts", said minister Amongi.
Amongi noted that even in the fourth Coming National Census 2024, LC's will be key in mobilizing the Households.
The Minister appreciated the local leaders for coming together in the group citing that President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has been advocating and encouraging people to join groups inorder to access government support that can later improve their livelihoods.
Minister Amongi equally fulfilled her pledged of 10M shillings each accorded to both Lira City West and East.
" I urge you to effectively utilize the funds distributed in the different Saccos in each division to develop", said Amongi.
