34 Arrested in Intelligence-Led Operations in Lira-City West Division Amid Rising Crime Concerns

LIRA-CITY, UGANDA – In a decisive crackdown on criminal activities in Lira-City West Division, the territorial police conducted an intelligence-led operation on December 10, 2024, resulting in the arrest of 34 suspects. These individuals, accused of terrorizing local residents and engaging in various criminal acts, were apprehended in notorious crime hotspots including Kamshwali, Te-Atat, Te-Dam, and Te-Kulu.

The operation was prompted by a surge in criminal incidents in these neighborhoods, identified during the Police Community Policing program, an initiative designed to foster collaboration between law enforcement and the community. Reports indicated that the suspects, comprising 25 males and 9 females, were allegedly involved in serious offenses such as smoking opium, sniffing aviation fuel, and committing thefts of personal belongings, including phones, wallets, and handbags. Additionally, they are suspected of perpetrating housebreakings, further alarming local residents.

SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, the North Kyoga Region Police Spokesperson, highlighted the importance of community involvement in these operations. "Our officers are currently recording the statements of the suspects, and we will compile their case files for review by the Regional Criminal Squad and appropriate legal action," Okema stated. He emphasized the critical role of citizen engagement in maintaining safety and security, referencing Article 17 of the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda, which underscores citizens' responsibilities in upholding law and order.

"This operation is a testament to the strong collaboration between the police and community members," Okema continued. "Their proactive sharing of information about security concerns has been invaluable in our efforts to combat crime in the area." Such community-policing initiatives have proven essential, as local residents often have the most insight into suspicious activities in their neighborhoods.

In light of these developments, community members have expressed both relief and hope for a safer environment. "It's about time something was done. We have been living in fear with these gangs roaming our streets," commented a local resident who preferred to remain anonymous. "The police's swift action gives us hope that our community can return to being safe for everyone."

The arrested suspects remain in police custody as authorities work to gather further evidence and prepare their cases for prosecution. The police have reiterated their call for continued cooperation from the community to facilitate timely interventions against criminal activity.

As Lira-City strives to regain its reputation as a safe haven, the recent police action serves as a crucial step in addressing the pressing issue of crime. The community's role in this fight against insecurity will be paramount, and ongoing dialogue between residents and law enforcement is essential for fostering a peaceful coexistence.

In a concluding remark, SP Okema urged citizens to remain vigilant and involved. "We encourage everyone to continue sharing information that can help us combat crime effectively. Together, we can cultivate a safer environment for all."
