32 Year Old Man Lynched to Death for Killing 82 Year Old Grandmother on Independence Day

Alebtong District was shaken by a horrific incident on the Independence Day, 9th of October 2024 when two lives were tragically cut short due to an act of violence. The incident, which took place at Amonomito cell Bediworo ward in Apala Town Council, was reported by Ogwal Norman Bilal, a 53-year-old social worker and resident of the same area.

According to reports, Omaa Jimmy, a 32-year-old individual, allegedly followed his grandmother, Acio Jane, who was 82 years old, to her home on that fateful evening. Omaa reportedly broke into the house, dragged his grandmother outside, and brutally attacked her by cutting the head severally, resulting in her death from severe head injuries. Subsequently, community members intervened, traced and apprehended Omaa who was in hiding, Omaa was subjected to mob justice, leading to his demise.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Omaa's actions were possibly influenced by opium and alcohol, as he had a history of substance abuse.

Law enforcement authorities, including the homicide team and Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO) from Alebtong District, swiftly responded to the incident. The crime scene was thoroughly examined, witnesses were interviewed, and statements were recorded from family members, including Omaa's father who revealed his son's troubled past and the challenges posed by his substance abuse.

Exhibits used in the commission of the crimes were recovered and exhibited. Postmortem conducted at the scene of crime for both bodies and handed over to the relatives for burial.

While no arrests have been made in relation to the mob justice against Omaa Jimmy, efforts to bring those responsible to justice are currently underway. In the wake of this tragic incident, the District authorities have emphasized the need for youth to steer clear of drug abuse and instead focus on constructive activities such as agriculture and government programs aimed at promoting sustainable livelihoods.

SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, the Police Spokesperson - North Kyoga region, expressed deep concern over the unfortunate events and urged the youth to actively engage in initiatives geared towards building a prosperous and stable community. By participating in programs like Emyoga, youth livelihood, and other developmental schemes, young individuals can contribute positively to society and help combat poverty in their communities.
